A differential is a player few managers own — here, under 10%. When he scores, you gain on almost everyone around you; when the template player scores instead, you lose ground. That trade is only worth making with a player who is expected to play most of the match and has a fixture to work with, which is why this list leaves out anyone flagged below 75% or predicted to play less than 45 minutes.
Differentials matter most when you are chasing: in a mini-league you trail, or late in the season when rank moves slowly. If you are protecting a lead, the safe captain and the template picks in the gameweek tips are the lower-risk route.
Gonzalo García is the differential most FPL outlets are circling: Fulham face Ipswich away, he is among the top forwards for shots, and Raúl Jiménez's exit may leave him on penalties, although that is not confirmed. Harvey Barnes has played 90 minutes in all five Newcastle games and is owned by about 6% of managers.
