FPL Gameweek 8 tips: captain, team news and deadline
FPL GW8 tips: the Friday 18:30 deadline, captain options, differentials, injury flags and European rotation risks before the 23 October deadline.
The FPL Gameweek 8 deadline is Friday 23 October 2026 at 18:30 UK time, rather than the usual Saturday, because Ipswich host Nottingham Forest at 20:00 that evening. Six Premier League clubs play in Europe between Wednesday and Thursday, so the late team news matters more than usual this week.
This guide records the position on Wednesday 21 October. Fixtures and injury flags come from the official FPL player feed and the Gameweek 8 fixture list. The predicted points on our GW8 tips, captain and differentials pages update as the news changes, so this article explains the reasoning rather than freezing numbers that will move.
Gameweek 8 fixtures and kick-off times
| Day (UK time) | Fixture |
|---|---|
| Friday 20:00 | Ipswich v Nottingham Forest |
| Saturday 12:30 | Aston Villa v Manchester City |
| Saturday 15:00 | Arsenal v Everton, Coventry v Fulham |
| Saturday 17:30 | Chelsea v Spurs |
| Sunday 14:00 | Crystal Palace v Newcastle, Hull v Brentford, Liverpool v Brighton, Man Utd v Bournemouth |
| Sunday 16:30 | Sunderland v Leeds |
UK clocks go back at 02:00 on Sunday 25 October, so the Sunday times are GMT. That does not affect the deadline, which falls on Friday evening. The full list with difficulty ratings is on the Gameweek 8 fixtures page.
The Friday deadline is the trap. Most clubs hold their press conferences on Thursday and Friday, and the Europa League sides play on Thursday night, so some news will arrive only a few hours before you need to save.
European rotation: who plays midweek
Arsenal visit Bayern Munich, Aston Villa host Viking and Manchester United visit Como in the Champions League on Wednesday 21 October. Manchester City and Liverpool played on Tuesday. On Thursday 22 October, Bournemouth host AC Milan and Crystal Palace visit Beşiktaş in the Europa League, Sunderland also play away in that competition, and Brighton play in the Conference League.
Sources: UEFA Champions League fixtures by team and Sky Sports' Europa and Conference League fixtures.
What that means for your team:
- Aston Villa have the shortest turnaround: Wednesday night at home, then City at 12:30 on Saturday. Expect changes, and be careful with Villa players whose minutes already looked uncertain.
- Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland and Brighton play on Thursday and again on Sunday. Their managers will have to rotate somewhere, most often in midfield and at full-back.
- Arsenal and Manchester United have until Saturday and Sunday respectively to recover. Their first-choice attackers are less likely to be rested, but a heavy game in Munich or Como can still change the XI.
- City and Liverpool played on Tuesday, giving them the longest recovery of the European clubs.
Our predicted lineups and the expected minutes on each player page are updated as the clubs name their sides, so compare them before and after the Thursday games.
Captaincy: Haaland, Bruno Fernandes or Saka
Haaland is still the default captain for most managers, and the rest he got on Tuesday helps. He stayed on the bench throughout City's 5-1 win over AEK Athens, in which Phil Foden scored a hat-trick (Sky Sports report). The fixture is the reason to look elsewhere: FPL rates the trip to Villa Park 3 out of 5 for City, Villa are coming off a Wednesday Champions League game of their own, and it is the early kick-off, so team news will land only after the deadline.
Bruno Fernandes hosts Bournemouth, who host AC Milan on Thursday night and then travel to Old Trafford. He ranks at the top of our midfield projections on Wednesday, and the Sunday kick-off means you will know Manchester United's European minutes before you decide. The risk is the Wednesday match at Como.
Saka hosts Everton on Saturday afternoon. FPL rates the fixture 3 out of 5 for Arsenal, and Saka sits just behind Bruno Fernandes in our midfield projections. Check the minutes he plays in Munich and whether Arsenal report any knocks on Friday.
The order between these three can change with one press conference. The live ranking on our captain page combines expected minutes with predicted points, which is a better guide than any number written into this article on Wednesday. If you own two of the three, captain the one with the safer start rather than the slightly higher projection.
Differentials worth a look
A differential only helps if he starts, so check expected minutes before predicted points. Three low-owned players our projections rate this week:
- Gonzalo (Fulham) visits Coventry, a promoted side. He has played most of Fulham's league minutes this season, and Fulham have no European fixture to manage.
- Rudoni (Coventry) is a budget midfielder owned by well under 1% of managers, playing at home against Fulham.
- Bruno G. (Arsenal) is a cheaper way into Arsenal's home fixture with Everton, but his start depends on how Arsenal rotate after Bayern.
The differentials page lists more, filtered by ownership.
Injuries, suspensions and doubts
The official FPL feed on Wednesday 21 October lists these as out with no return date:
- Semenyo (Manchester City, knee). Manager Enzo Maresca said he will "probably" be out for eight weeks (eNCA). He is owned by about 12% of managers, so he is the clearest sale of the week.
- Szoboszlai (Liverpool, hamstring). Andoni Iraola said the problem is in the same place as the previous week's and that Liverpool must be patient (Liverpool FC).
- Saliba (Arsenal, back) and Martinez (Chelsea goalkeeper, head).
Suspended: Brentford's Janelt and Yarmoliuk, and Sunderland's Danso.
Doubts (75% unless stated): O'Reilly and Matheus Nunes (Manchester City), Marmoush and Robertson (Spurs), Manzambi (Aston Villa), Rashford (Manchester United), Brobbey and Isidor (Sunderland, Isidor 50%), and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Henderson (50%). Spurs' Pedro Porro is listed as expected back on 24 October, the day of the Chelsea game.
Isak and Gakpo carry no flag in Wednesday's feed after their recent problems. A missing flag is not a guaranteed start, so check the injury list and lineups on Friday before you buy either.
How to use your transfer
- Fix the certain problems first. Semenyo and Szoboszlai are flagged out; a 75% doubt is usually a hold until the press conferences.
- Wait until Friday if you can. With the deadline at 18:30, you have the Friday press conferences and the Thursday European line-ups before you need to commit.
- Think about Gameweek 9 too. Your next deadline is Saturday 31 October at 11:00 UK time. Our early GW9 guide looks at the fixture swings from Gameweek 9 to 12, which is the time to bring in a player with a good run.
The planner shows how a transfer changes your projected points across the next few gameweeks, not just this weekend.
Chips
Gameweek 8 has no blank or double fixtures. A Free Hit is only worth it if injuries leave you short of eleven fit starters. If you are wildcarding, plan around the runs from Gameweek 9 onwards rather than this weekend alone.
